The Dahlonega area has had five vineyards and wineries begin operations since 1997 giving this area the largest concentration of vineyards in Georgia. Blackstock established it's vineyards in 1997 and Three Sisrters, Frogtown and Wolf Mountain vineyards began growing grapes and making wine soon after. Blackstock which had been supplying grapes for other wineries began wine making in 2006. Montaluce was established in 2008 and a sixth winery, Cavender Creek Vineyard, is expected to begin operations in 2010.

The red clay soil, elevation, steep hill sides, low humidity and climate all contribute to the unique nature of the wines made in this area. A summery of the history of wine making in Georgia and the reasons the Dahlonega area is adaptable to producing award winning wines is described in the Blackstock web site.
